Leo Neugebauer discusses post-Olympic depression

German decathlete Leo Neugebauer has opened up about experiencing post-Olympic depression following his silver medal win at the 2024 Paris Olympics. Speaking on the podcast ‘Wie geht's? Mit Robin Gosens’, the 26-year-old athlete described the period one to two months after the Games as a time when he felt he ‘fell into a hole’ due to the sudden change in his highly structured daily routine.

Neugebauer, who also recently secured a gold medal at the European Championships, reflected on the mental challenges of elite competition. He noted that his preparation for the Olympics was not entirely healthy, as he had very little social contact. To recover from the mental low, he found success by allowing himself to engage in activities outside of his sport.
