Leo Tolstoy: Marking the 198th anniversary of the legendary Russian author
The literary world marks the 198th anniversary of the birth of Leo Tolstoy, one of history’s most influential writers. Born on September 9, 1828, in the Yasnaya Polyana estate near Tula, Tolstoy rose from an aristocratic background to become a profound moral and philosophical authority.
His literary career was deeply shaped by his experiences in the military, including service in the Caucasus and participation in the Crimean War. These encounters with violence and death informed early works such as the ‘Sevastopol Sketches’. He achieved global fame through monumental masterpieces including ‘War and Peace’, which explores the Napoleonic Wars and human agency, and ‘Anna Karenina’, a complex study of family, marriage, and social norms.
In his later years, Tolstoy underwent a spiritual crisis that led him to distance himself from the established Church. He became a proponent of pacifism, simplicity, and moral reform, frequently critiquing the social structures of Imperial Russia and advocating for the rights and modernization of the peasantry following the abolition of serfdom in 1861.
