LeoLabs radar investigation: Argentine commission takes testimony from former officials
A legislative investigative commission in Argentina is examining the installation of a LeoLabs radar at Estancia El Relincho in Tolhuin. To clarify responsibilities, the commission traveled to Buenos Aires to take testimony from several former national officials.
Former Defense Minister Jorge Taiana testified that he requested the Chief of Cabinet to revoke the precarious authorization for the radar, noting a Ministry of Defense report from August 2023 highlighted the equipment's potential dual civil and military functions. Former Joint Staff Chief Juan Martín Paleo indicated that the existing legal framework prevented the Ministry of Defense from ordering the radar's disarmament.
Gustavo López, former Vice President of ENACOM, clarified that the agency had no legal jurisdiction over radar or satellite authorization, as these matters fall under the Chief of Cabinet. He noted that any disarmament of the private property would require Federal Justice intervention. The commission intends to request a technical inspection via the Chief of Cabinet to determine if the radar is currently operational.
