Leon Black sues House Oversight Committee over Epstein probe subpoenas

Billionaire investor and former Apollo Global Management CEO Leon Black has filed a federal lawsuit to block subpoenas issued by the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform. The legal action follows Black’s refusal to appear for a scheduled deposition on Thursday as part of a congressional investigation into the ties between Jeffrey Epstein and various influential figures.

The subpoenas, issued in June, require Black to provide testimony and produce nondisclosure agreements (NDAs) he held with several women. Black’s legal team argues that the committee is conducting a ‘fishing expedition’ that exceeds its delegated authority by seeking private information unrelated to a legitimate legislative purpose. His attorney, Susan Estrich, stated the investigation is ‘trying to destroy Mr. Black’ rather than seeking the truth about Epstein.

Congressional leaders from both parties criticized the move. Committee Chairman James Comer expressed disappointment, noting that Black is a critical witness, while top Democrat Robert Garcia called the lawsuit ‘laughable’ and an attempt to delay the investigation. Lawmakers are currently discussing whether to formally hold Black in contempt of Congress, a move that could lead to criminal prosecution by the Department of Justice.
