Leon Panetta warns Russia may test NATO defenses in Europe
Former CIA Director and U.S. Defense Secretary Leon Panetta has warned that Russia is systematically testing NATO's defensive capabilities. In an interview with BILD, Panetta suggested that military actions could potentially extend to European soil, including Germany.
Panetta cited several recent incidents as warning signs, including an explosive drone at Leipzig Airport, a Russian missile impact in Poland, a drone crash in Romania, and repeated airspace violations in the Baltic states. He argued that Vladimir Putin is attempting to determine if the United States and NATO allies are truly committed to the collective defense obligations outlined in Article 5 of the NATO treaty.
Panetta attributed Russia's increasing aggression to the pressures of the war in Ukraine and potential political friction between the United States and European NATO partners. He emphasized that the West must establish clear red lines to demonstrate that military actions against European nations will not be tolerated.
