Playa del Carmen and Puerto Morelos leaders report municipal progress
In Quintana Roo, municipal leaders in Playa del Carmen and Puerto Morelos have released updates regarding local governance and community services.
Playa del Carmen Mayor Estefanía Mercado presented her second government report, highlighting significant shifts in public safety. Between January and July 2026, the municipality reported a 46.4 percent decrease in intentional homicides, a 46 percent drop in motorcycle thefts, and a 45.1 percent reduction in vehicle thefts. The administration has allocated 1.6 billion pesos toward security equipment and technology over the last two years. Additionally, social programs such as ‘Salud Sin Tanto Choro’ and ‘Playa Llena, Corazón Contento’ have reached thousands of beneficiaries, while infrastructure efforts included the installation of 65,000 square meters of asphalt.
In Puerto Morelos, Mayor Blanca Merari Tziu Muñoz has focused on expanding access to civil registry services. Through the ‘Registro Civil Itinerante’ program, the municipality has conducted 12 mobile brigades to provide birth registrations, marriages, and free certified copies to remote communities. The municipal registry has processed 4,149 acts, marking a 36.2 percent increase compared to the previous period.
Additionally, Leona Vicario is preparing for the Janal Pixán 2026 ‘Alma & Raíz’ festival, scheduled for October 30, 2026, to celebrate cultural traditions through various community contests.
