Leonard Cohen: Remembering the Canadian poet and singer 10 years after death

The world marks the tenth anniversary of the passing of Leonard Cohen, the acclaimed Canadian poet, novelist, and singer-songwriter, who died in Los Angeles on November 7, 2016, at the age of 82.

Cohen achieved musical prominence following his 1967 debut, “Songs of Leonard Cohen,” and became renowned for iconic works such as “Hallelujah,” “Suzanne,” and “Famous Blue Raincoat.” His artistry was characterized by deep literary roots, often incorporating biblical motifs, spirituality, and themes of longing.

Beyond his musical career, Cohen was a respected figure in the Canadian literary world, authoring novels like “Beautiful Losers” and poetry collections such as “The Spice-Box of Earth.” His life was marked by diverse experiences, including a period of living in a Zen Buddhist monastery at Mount Baldy in California during the 1990s.

His connection to the Greek island of Hydra also remains a significant part of his legacy; he purchased a home there in the early 1960s for approximately 1,500 dollars, a location that deeply influenced his personal and artistic life.
