Leonard Lekgetho appointed head of Special Investigating Unit

President Cyril Ramaphosa has appointed Leonard Lekgetho as the permanent head of the Special Investigating Unit (SIU), effective September 1, 2026. Lekgetho, who has been serving as the acting head, succeeds Advocate Andy Mothibi, who transitioned to the role of National Director of Public Prosecutions in February.

Lekgetho brings nearly 20 years of experience within the SIU, having held various roles ranging from investigator to Chief Operations Officer. His background includes service in the former Directorate of Special Operations and academic qualifications in law, education, science, forensic auditing, and cyber law.

Justice Minister Mmamoloko Kubayi expressed confidence in the appointment, noting that the SIU is a vital institution for safeguarding public resources and promoting accountability. The SIU is an independent statutory body tasked with investigating corruption, malpractice, and maladministration within state institutions and recovering lost public funds through civil litigation.
