Leonardo awarded ESA contract for EU Earth Observation architecture

Leonardo has been awarded a fully funded contract by the European Space Agency (ESA) to define the architecture for the future EU Earth Observation Governmental Service (EOGS). This initiative aims to enhance Europe’s autonomous decision-making capabilities in the sectors of security and defence by leveraging space data.

The project is one of two parallel architectural studies funded by the European Commission. Led by Leonardo, the study will utilize technologies and expertise from partners including Telespazio, Thales Alenia Space, and e-Geos to develop a sovereign, resilient, and federated end-to-end architecture. This will encompass the entire value chain, including space systems, sensors, ground infrastructure, data processing, and services.

A primary focus of the study is to perform a gap analysis of current capabilities and evaluate architectural solutions based on performance, responsiveness, and affordability. A central goal is the federation of existing and future European assets, allowing national, institutional, and commercial capabilities to function as an integrated system.
