Leonardo boosts Italy's cyber‑security effort amid surge in health‑sector attacks

Leonardo CEO Francesco Macrì told a Confindustria event in Florence that the defence group is expanding its cyber‑security footprint across Tuscany, working with 240 supplier firms that secured €260 million in orders for 2025. The company employs about 2,500 directly and supports roughly 6,500 jobs in the regional supply chain, positioning itself as Italy’s leading manufacturing firm in advanced technology and strategic autonomy.

A recent CLUSIT report on cyber‑security in the health sector shows a sharp rise in successful attacks, from 210 incidents in 2020 to 1,053 in 2025 worldwide. In Italy, the number of cyber events grew 47.4 % in 2025 compared with the previous year. Threats are dominated by ransomware, phishing, DDoS and AI‑driven exploits, with notable cases such as a $25 million ransom demand on Danish pharmaceutical giant Novo Nordisk and state‑linked campaigns from Iran and a Chinese‑attributed APT (UNC6508) targeting hospitals and research centres.
