Leonardo da Vinci: historical roles and artistic legacy

Historical records and recent analyses provide insight into Leonardo da Vinci’s multifaceted career as an artist, architect, and engineer. In September 1502, while serving as architect and general engineer for Cesare Borgia, Leonardo visited Cesenatico to inspect the local port. His primary objective was to address severe silting issues caused by marine currents. While popular myths suggest he founded the port, historical evidence indicates the port existed since 1302. Leonardo’s contributions are documented in his Codice L, where he recorded observations on wind patterns, specifically the “quarta di tramontana,” to understand sediment accumulation.

Beyond his engineering feats, Leonardo’s life is often analyzed through the lens of his personal history, including his relationship with his mother, Caterina. Psychological interpretations, such as those by Sigmund Freud, have explored how the perceived absence of his mother may have influenced his scientific and artistic pursuits. His legacy continues to be explored through various mediums, including theatrical productions that combine dance, sound, and light to depict his transition from a vulnerable individual to a global icon of human genius.
