Leonardo Díaz moves from River debut to Huracán de San Rafael

Goalkeeper Leonardo Díaz, who made a memorable debut for River Plate in a Superclásico against Boca Juniors on 16 May 2021 after a COVID‑19 outbreak sidelined the club’s senior keepers, has signed for Huracán de San Rafael. His debut featured several key saves and a penalty stop in the Copa de la Liga quarter‑finals, though River was eliminated on penalties.

After the River stint, Díaz spent 2023 on loan with Las Vegas Lights in the United States and later played for Nueva Chicago without establishing a regular place. In June 2024 the Mendoza‑based club announced his arrival for the Torneo Regional Federal Amateur, the fifth tier of Argentine football, as part of a project that also includes veteran defender Leonel Vangioni. Huracán de San Rafael aims to achieve promotion to the Federal A division.

The move marks a sharp drop from the top‑flight spotlight to the regional amateur level, highlighting the unpredictable trajectory of a player once highlighted by coach Marcelo Gallardo during an emergency debut.
