Leonardo Fabbri and Andy Diaz set record throws at Italian Championships in Florence

The Italian Athletics Championships (Campionati Italiani Assoluti) took place at Stadio Ridolfi in Florence, producing standout performances in the men’s triple‑jump and shot‑put.

Andy Diaz, the 30‑year‑old athlete of Cuban origin, recorded a new Italian triple‑jump mark of 17.87 m on his first attempt, surpassing the previous national record by 15 cm. He secured victory over compatriot Simone Biasutti and Andrea Dallavalle, though he withdrew after three jumps, citing a desire to focus on the upcoming European Championships.

Leonardo Fabbri delivered a dominant shot‑put display, culminating in a best throw of 22.43 m on his fifth attempt. He opened the competition with 21.32 m and 21.05 m, broke the 22‑metre barrier on his fourth jump, and finished ahead of Zane Weir (21.42 m) and Nick Ponzio (20.86 m). The performance follows recent Diamond League successes, including a 22.74 m throw in Eugene.

Both athletes view the Florence results as a statement ahead of the European Championships scheduled for 10–16 August in Birmingham, where they aim to contend for continental titles.
