Leonardo Padura awarded Premio Liber 2026

Cuban writer Leonardo Padura has been awarded the Premio Liber 2026 for the most outstanding Hispano-American author. The award was granted by the Federación de Gremios de Editores de España (FGEE).

The jury praised Padura for his ability to research and tell stories that explore truth, guilt, friendship, and the impact of history on individual lives. They also noted his international projection and the diverse range of genres in his work, which has brought Cuban reality to a global literary stage.

Padura, born in Havana in 1955 and a recipient of the Princess of Asturias Award for Literature in 2015, expressed deep gratitude and pride. He noted that the recognition serves not only him but also the culture to which he belongs, emphasizing his identity as a Cuban writer living and writing in Cuba.
