Leonel Fernández criticizes Dominican government over security and living costs

Leonel Fernández, president of the Fuerza del Pueblo party, criticized the current administration of the Partido Revolucionario Moderno (PRM) during a swearing-in ceremony for new party leaders in San Cristóbal. Fernández characterized the government as “inept” and “inefficient,” citing rising insecurity and the high cost of living as primary evidence of failure.

Regarding public safety, Fernández described the PRM’s performance as a “failure,” noting that there have been five changes in the leadership of the National Police over the last six years. He also questioned the effectiveness of ongoing police reforms.

Addressing economic concerns, Fernández compared food prices in the Dominican Republic to those in Reading, Pennsylvania. He noted that plantains in the United States are cheaper than in the Dominican Republic, despite the latter being a producer. He also highlighted the high cost of chicken, electricity rates, blackouts, and difficulties with the potable water supply as major issues affecting the population. Looking toward the 2028 elections, Fernández stated that his party aims to reach 2.5 million members.
