Dominican opposition leaders criticize service failures and economic management

Opposition leaders in the Dominican Republic are intensifying their criticism of the current administration. Leonel Fernández, president of the Fuerza del Pueblo (FP), described Santo Domingo Este as facing a ‘perfect storm’ of 12-hour power outages, water shortages, and waste accumulation. He emphasized that the municipality is a political priority for his party due to its large population and economic importance.

Simultaneously, former president Danilo Medina criticized the government's economic management, stating that current policies are making life more expensive for citizens. Medina specifically pointed to rising public debt interest, increased public payroll, and higher pension costs as evidence of government inefficiency.

In response to these service failures, community leaders in Cancino Adentro have called for urgent government intervention to address infrastructure gaps in water, electricity, and road safety. Meanwhile, the Fuerza del Pueblo has been actively strengthening its local structures across Greater Santo Domingo through a series of membership drives and leadership incorporations aimed at the 2028 elections.
