Leonel Fernández: Rejection of PRM Grows as Hardships Mount in Dominican Republic

Leonel Fernández, leader of the Fuerza del Pueblo (FP), addressed a mass oath‑taking of new members in Nagua, María Trinidad Sánchez, on Sunday. He warned that public rejection of the Partido Revolucionario Moderno (PRM) “grows in proportion to the increasing hardships of the people,” citing water shortages, rolling power outages, stalled infrastructure projects such as the Nagua aqueduct expansion and the unfinished waterfront, and the impact of imported rice and chicken on national producers.

Fernández said the social discontent fuels the FP’s expansion across all provinces, noting the involvement of evangelical pastors, professionals, and community leaders. He predicted that this momentum will lead to a decisive electoral victory for the FP in the 2028 presidential race, adding that “the stars are aligning” for his party.

The remarks were made during a ceremony that also saw the swearing‑in of members from both the PRM and the PLD, highlighting the party’s strategy of broadening its base amid growing public dissatisfaction.
