Dominican political and civic leaders address diaspora issues
Political activity and civic issues involving the Dominican diaspora in the United States are drawing significant attention. Geraldo Rosario, a coordinator for the Fuerza del Pueblo party, reported a surge in support for former President Leonel Fernández across New York and surrounding states following a recent visit to the region.
In terms of civic administration, community activist Iván Canals has called on the Junta Central Electoral (JCE) to expand identification services in the United States. He noted that the current reliance on the Dominican Consulate in New York causes significant delays for the diaspora, proposing mobile operations in areas like the Bronx, Brooklyn, and New Jersey to facilitate the issuance of identity cards.
Additionally, community leader Roberto Rojas has voiced support for President Luis Abinader’s security initiatives in the Dominican Republic. These measures include increased police patrols, the use of body cameras, and the creation of the National Residential Care Service (Senar) to protect minors.
