Dominican Republic political leaders launch new campaigns and tours

Political activity in the Dominican Republic is intensifying as various leaders prepare for future electoral cycles. Gonzalo Castillo, a presidential aspirant for the Partido de la Liberación Dominicana (PLD), has launched a national tour starting in the province of Azua. His campaign aims to strengthen local structures and address community concerns, specifically focusing on food security.

In a separate development, Leonel Fernández, president of the Fuerza del Pueblo party, held an event in Castillo to swear in Alberto Brito Quiroz, known as “Juan Maluca,” a former mayor from the Partido Revolucionario Moderno (PRM). During the ceremony, Fernández criticized the current administration's economic impact, citing issues with electricity blackouts, water shortages, and rising food costs.

Additionally, the PLD's organizing commission (CONAP 2026) met with presidential aspirant Luis de León to discuss the logistics of a party consultation scheduled for October 18. Meanwhile, in Santo Domingo Este, political leader Moisés Cuevas announced his support for Rafael Castillo’s mayoral aspirations, proposing a 100-day action plan to address local community issues.
