Leonel Fernández's Fuerza del Pueblo faces growth limits in Dominican politics

The Fuerza del Pueblo (FP) party was created in late 2019 after a split in the Partido de la Liberación Dominicana (PLD). It is led by former three‑time president Leonel Fernández, whose personal prominence has both anchored the party and constrained its expansion.

Many senior PLD figures have stayed with the PLD, limiting FP’s ability to attract the broader Peledeísta electorate. Consequently, FP has not yet replaced the weakened PLD as the dominant force, unlike the earlier transition from the Partido Reformista Dominicano (PRD) to the Modern Revolutionary Party (PRM). The party’s leadership is described as a “closed equation,” centered on Fernández, with succession likely to pass to his son Omar Fernández if Leonel steps aside. Upcoming elections, particularly those in 2028, will be decisive for FP’s future trajectory.
