Leopard recovers from paralysis after Gujarat highway accident

A leopard that was paralyzed following a road accident on the Kheracha-Khodambha Highway in Gujarat's Aravalli district has successfully regained the ability to walk. The animal was critically injured on January 19, 2026, after being struck by a vehicle, resulting in a traumatic lumbosacral fracture-subluxation at the L7-S1 region.

Following its rescue by forest officials, the leopard received specialized veterinary treatment and rehabilitation at the Gujarat Ecological Education and Research (GEER) Foundation in Gandhinagar. The injury caused complete paralysis in both hind limbs, forcing the animal to drag its hindquarters using its forelimbs. In addition to the spinal trauma, the leopard suffered a serious lower-jaw injury and oral infections.

Through controlled movement, postural management, and nutritional support, the leopard gradually regained its posture and natural gait. Despite the successful physical recovery, officials have deemed the animal unfit for release back into the wild.
