Leopard seal attracts crowds at Petone Beach

A leopard seal resting on Petone Beach in Lower Hutt has drawn significant crowds, with over 150 visitors reported since the animal came ashore on Saturday afternoon.

The Department of Conservation (DOC) has issued warnings for the public to maintain a distance of at least 20 metres from the animal and to keep dogs on leads. While some visitors have been respectful, reports indicated instances of people approaching too closely and a dog being allowed to near the seal. DOC officials noted that leopard seals are apex predators that can move quickly if threatened, despite appearing harmless while resting.

Leopard seals are protected under the Marine Mammals Protection Act 1978. While typically found near Antarctic pack ice, small numbers visit New Zealand throughout the year. DOC stated they are not attempting to force the seal back into the water, expecting it to return to sea once it is ready.
