Situational Awareness AI hedge fund collapses after margin calls
The AI-focused hedge fund Situational Awareness, managed by Leopold Aschenbrenner, has faced a significant collapse following margin calls triggered by a sharp decline in semiconductor and AI infrastructure stocks. The fund, which reportedly utilized up to 400% leverage, saw its assets under management drop from approximately $45 billion in early July to around $10 billion by mid-week.
As a result of forced sales, much of the fund's public portfolio, including positions in companies like SK Hynix and CoreWeave, was taken over by Citadel. Despite the liquidation, the event has sparked divergent reactions: while Wall Street viewed it as a failure of risk management, many in Silicon Valley have responded by seeking to invest in Aschenbrenner's talent, viewing the downturn as a buying opportunity.
Situational Awareness has currently notified investors that it is not accepting new capital. The incident caused short-term volatility in the technology sector, though broader markets like the S&P 500 and Nasdaq have remained resilient, recently reaching new highs.
