Leopold Museum celebrates 25 years in Vienna

The Leopold Museum in Vienna is celebrating its 25th anniversary, marking two decades of growth from a private collection into a major public institution. Since its opening in 2001, the museum has welcomed approximately nine million visitors and expanded its holdings to roughly 9,000 objects, originating from an initial collection of over 5,200 works.

The museum’s core focus remains Austrian art from the 19th and early 20th centuries, specifically the Vienna 1900 period and Expressionism. Its permanent exhibition features world-renowned works by Gustav Klimt, Egon Schiele, and Oskar Kokoschka. The collection was established by Rudolf and Elisabeth Leopold, who founded the Leopold Museum Private Foundation in 1994 in partnership with the Republic of Austria and the Austrian National Bank to ensure the preservation of their art.

To commemorate the milestone, the museum offered free admission and guided tours of the permanent exhibition.
