Leros care facility sexual abuse case set for appeal trial

The Dodecanese Mixed Court of Appeal has scheduled October 5, 2026, for the second-instance trial regarding a serious sexual abuse case involving minors at a care facility in Leros.

The defendant, a former employee of the facility, was previously sentenced to 26 years and 30 months in prison by a first-instance court for rape and other serious charges against minors. The case originated from a complaint filed in the autumn of 2020, highlighting vulnerabilities faced by children with severe health issues and intellectual disabilities within the care structure. The accused is currently under strict restrictive conditions, including a travel ban and a requirement to report monthly to a police station.
