Leros, Greece: Fire at Closed Controlled Facility Contained

A fire broke out on the night of Sunday 5 July 2026 in the area of the Closed Controlled Facility on Leros island, South Aegean, Greece. Municipal technical services, the regional fire brigade, volunteer firefighters, private water‑tank crews and local residents were dispatched immediately. Mayor Timotheos Kottakis oversaw the operation, maintaining contact with the fire service, the Minister of Migration and Asylum Thanos Plevris and the South Aegean regional governor.

The blaze has been brought under control, with authorities monitoring the site to prevent any re‑ignition. The cause of the fire is still under investigation and no casualties or major property damage have been reported.
