Brazil climate extremes cause R$ 455.5 billion in losses

Extreme weather events in Brazil have caused R$ 455.5 billion in material damages and losses to both public and private sectors between 2015 and 2024. Data from the AdaptaCidades program, coordinated by the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change, indicates that 84.5% of Brazilian municipalities were affected by these disasters.

The agricultural sector is particularly vulnerable due to its dependence on temperature, water availability, and rainfall patterns. Climate-related disruptions, such as floods, droughts, and windstorms, threaten infrastructure including roads, bridges, and energy supplies, which can paralyze irrigation, cooling, and processing systems.

In response to recent flooding in Rio Grande do Sul, companies like Leroy Merlin have implemented new adaptation strategies. Following the impact on over 70 employees, the company established a prevention-focused model involving preparation, emergency response, and reconstruction, utilizing a Solidarity Fund to provide financial support for staff during climate emergencies.
