Les Deux Alpes investigation launched after antisemitic video

An investigation has been opened in the Les Deux Alpes ski resort following a viral video showing a food stall manager making antisemitic remarks to an Orthodox Jewish tourist. In the footage, the merchant is heard saying, “The Jewish community, you are too many. At some point, people get fed up.”

The incident, which occurred in mid-August, has sparked significant tension in the region. French Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez condemned the remarks, and the case has been referred to the Grenoble prosecutor's office for investigation into public provocation of hatred or violence based on religion or origin.

The victim, Elie Sultan, expressed shock at the encounter, noting he has frequented the station for years without such treatment. Éric Hattab, president of CRIF Grenoble-Dauphiné, criticized the incident, questioning if there is a “quota” for Jewish people in the mountains.

Local residents and some business owners have expressed underlying frustrations regarding the presence of large Orthodox communities, citing concerns over integration and lifestyle differences. Conversely, Jewish tourists have reported feeling unwelcome, noting instances of verbal hostility toward those wearing kippas. While some local merchants claim the situation is being “blown out of proportion,” authorities continue to investigate the legal implications of the recorded comments.
