Les enfants vont bien film explores impact of maternal abandonment

The French film ‘Les enfants vont bien’ (Out of Love), directed by Nathan Ambrosioni, explores the emotional and practical consequences of voluntary disappearance within a family. The story follows Suzanne, who unexpectedly leaves her two young children, Margaux and Gaspard, to seek a life of her own, leaving them in the care of her sister Jeanne.

Jeanne, a woman who chose not to have children, must suddenly navigate the responsibilities of motherhood while the children struggle to find balance in a new environment. The film examines how children of different ages, specifically a six-year-old and a nine-year-old, process the abandonment and the uncertainty of their mother’s return.

Ambrosioni, aged 26, received the Best Director award for this work at the Karlovy Vary film festival. The film is scheduled for release on August 13, 2026.
