Fred Cavayé adapts Victor Hugo’s Les Misérables for film

Director Fred Cavayé has released a new cinematic adaptation of Victor Hugo’s classic novel, Les Misérables. The production, which carries a budget of approximately 40 million euros, features a prominent cast including Vincent Lindon as Jean Valjean and Tahar Rahim as Javert. Other key cast members include Camille Cottin and Benjamin Lavernhe as the Thénardiers, and Noémie Merlant as Fantine.

Critics have noted the film’s stylistic approach, with some comparing its pacing and action elements to the style of Luc Besson’s Taken. While the film has been praised for its atmosphere and the performances of Rahim and Cottin, some reviews suggest that the adaptation prioritizes efficiency and personal heroism over the subtle complexity of the original literary work.

The film is scheduled for release in theaters on October 14.
