Lesbos livestock farmers stage protest over port closure and disease
On Monday 27 July at 10:30 a.m., livestock farmers gathered outside the central Port Authority of Mytilene on the island of Lesbos. The demonstration was organized by the Federation of Agricultural Associations of Lesbos (OASL) after authorities called farmers and union representatives to testify about recent mobilisations and the temporary closure of the port.
The protest targets a non‑contagious fever that has severely affected the island’s livestock farms. The OASL presented a list of demands: immediate full compensation for dead animals and support until herds are restocked; replacement of lost income and compensation for unsold lamb carcasses caused by the shutdown of slaughterhouses; full subsidies for animal feed; staffing of the Veterinary Service with permanent veterinarians and local clinics; mandatory 24‑hour disinfection of the port and key road points, financed entirely by the state; a freeze on all debts to banks, tax authorities and feed suppliers for the quarantine period, with state coverage of social‑security contributions; and a state‑run vaccination programme covering any side effects.
