Lesbos surveillance finds ongoing contagious fever cases in livestock

The first epidemiological surveillance report of the General Directorate of Veterinary of the Ministry of Rural Development and Food covers the period 15 March – 22 July 2026 on the island of Lesbos. It examined 1,652 sheep and goat farms, of which 182 tested positive (11.02%), and 56 cattle farms, of which 14 were positive (25%).

In the updated 10‑kilometre protection zone, 237 sheep/goat farms and two cattle farms were all negative, and in the further restricted zone 81 sheep/goat farms also tested negative. The data show that the disease continues to be detected on the island, underscoring the need for continuous vigilance, intensified epidemiological monitoring, strict bio‑security measures at island entry points, and prompt reporting of suspect cases.

General Secretary of Agricultural Development and Food Spiros Protoplastis said, “The epidemiological study documents the huge challenge we face on Lesbos and the great effort of veterinary authorities. Combating contagious fever requires calm, cooperation and science.” The report involved veterinary services of the North Aegean Region, the Greek Army and the ELGO‑DIMITRA laboratory.
