Lesotho and China mark major national anniversaries
Lesotho and China are preparing to celebrate major national anniversaries this October. Lesotho will mark 60 years of independence, while the People’s Republic of China celebrates 77 years since its founding.
The two nations, which established official diplomatic relations in 1983 and restored them in 1993, have elevated their relationship to a strategic partnership. Recent cooperation has focused on education and infrastructure. For instance, 16 NUL scholars recently received Chinese scholarships for advanced studies in fields such as agricultural engineering, soil science, and animal genetics.
In the health sector, the partnership resulted in the construction of the Maseru District Regional Hospital and Eye Clinic, a project funded and built by China in collaboration with Wuhan No. 1 Hospital. Bilateral coordination has been further strengthened through the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC).
