Lesotho prepares for El Nino heat and drought in 2026/27

Lesotho’s Ministry of Environment and Forestry has issued a warning regarding the upcoming 2026/27 El Nino season, forecasting below-normal rainfall and intense heat, particularly in the lowlands. While heavier rains are anticipated between January and March 2027, officials warned that these could cause significant damage to crops, homes, and infrastructure.

To mitigate these risks, the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security has allocated M200 million (approximately US$12.5 million) to support farmers, provide food assistance, and manage drought and crop failure. The ministry noted that development partners will be essential in addressing the impacts of the weather pattern.
