Lesotho strengthens trade frameworks and MSME capacity

Lesotho is implementing new initiatives to strengthen its trade capacity and support small businesses in accessing regional and continental markets.

The Ministry of Trade, Industry and Business Development has launched a programme to establish a National Consultative Framework for tariffs and trade remedies. Supported by the Southern African Customs Union (SACU), this initiative aims to improve coordination between government institutions, the private sector, and regional trade stakeholders. The framework is designed to create a structured consultation process to ensure economic interests are considered before decisions regarding trade policy, tariffs, and remedies are made.

Simultaneously, the government is working to equip Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) for growth through the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA). In partnership with the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (ECA) and the UNDP, a capacity-building workshop will be held in Maseru to help approximately 70 MSMEs navigate challenges such as Rules of Origin, trade standard compliance, and digital trade tools. These efforts seek to leverage opportunities within SACU, the Southern African Development Community (SADC), and the AfCFTA to expand Lesotho’s export capabilities.
