Lesotho wool and mohair roadshow promotes local value addition

The International Trade Centre’s Ethical Fashion Initiative (EFI) has launched a five-district roadshow in Lesotho to promote local value addition for the wool and mohair sectors. The initiative aims to transform these materials from raw agricultural commodities into high-value products through creativity, entrepreneurship, and innovation.

Wool and mohair represent approximately 60 per cent of Lesotho’s agricultural exports and support more than 45,000 rural households. However, much of the fiber is currently exported in raw or unprocessed forms, limiting local economic benefits. The project, implemented in collaboration with the Government of Lesotho and the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), seeks to equip micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs), artisans, and designers with the skills necessary for product development, branding, and manufacturing.

The roadshow, running through September 24, visits Berea, Leribe, Thaba-Tseka, Mohale’s Hoek, and Maseru. It provides training, mentorship, and assistance with market sourcing and online visibility to help local businesses reach regional and international markets.
