Lester Barclay retained as Chicago Transit Authority board chair

The Chicago Transit Authority (CTA) board has voted unanimously to retain Lester Barclay as its chair. This decision marks one of the first actions taken by the newly reorganized seven-member board following state-mandated changes.

Barclay’s leadership has been a subject of debate among transit advocates. Critics have pointed to his infrequent use of the transit system and his previous opposition to increased oversight from the National Institute for Transit Advancement (NITA). Barclay has defended his position, stating he supports transit reform and transit-oriented development, while noting his prior experience as outside counsel for the agency. His appointment still requires confirmation by the Illinois State Senate.
