L’Estranea selected to represent Italy at the 2027 Oscars

Paolo Strippoli’s film “L’Estranea” has been selected to represent Italy in the International Feature Film category at the 99th Academy Awards. The decision was made by a selection committee established by ANICA on behalf of the Academy.

Chosen from a pool of 21 Italian films, the committee described the work as “a new, genre film by a young author, who has recently begun his journey and has been appreciated by national and international audiences.” The film, which blends psychological thriller, horror, and family drama, features a cast including Jasmine Trinca, Romana Maggiora Vergano, Adriano Giannini, and Valeria Bruni Tedeschi.

“L’Estranea” previously appeared at the Venice Film Festival and the Toronto International Film Festival, where it earned the People’s Choice Midnight Madness Award. The film is scheduled for Italian theatrical release on October 8. The next stage in the Oscar race is the announcement of the shortlist of 15 films on December 15, 2026, followed by official nominations on January 21, 2027.
