Lesvos childcare workers set for permanent employment

A new law published in the Government Gazette has cleared the path for the permanent employment of 61 workers across 18 nursery, infant, and toddler stations on Lesvos. The legislation modifies Article 127, stipulating that the number of positions established in municipalities is determined by the full capacity of these childcare facilities.

Nikos Spanos, president of the Social Protection and Solidarity Association of the Municipalities of Mytilene and West Lesvos, stated that the 61 workers involved have all served in these stations for at least two consecutive years. Efforts are currently underway to meet an October 15 deadline to secure an additional 24 permanent positions for the island's childcare structures.

Furthermore, there are ongoing attempts to hire eight emergency staff members, primarily nursery teachers and kindergarten teachers, to address issues with voucher absorption in infant sections. Local authorities are also seeking approval from the Ministry of Interior to establish new nursery departments in Kalloni and Gera to better serve central areas.
