Lesvos farmer dies after herd is culled due to swine fever

A livestock farmer in Lesvos has died following the culling of his herd due to African swine fever. The Mytilene Primary Sector Body reported the death, noting that the individual had previously been in good health but struggled to cope with the loss of his livestock.

The organization emphasized the human toll of the epidemic, stating that the herd represented the farmer's life's work and primary source of income. In a statement, the Body remarked, “Behind every animal that is slaughtered, there is a human being,” and called on the state to protect and support farmers facing such destruction.

The tragedy occurs amid an ongoing crisis on the island, where numerous farming families are facing significant livestock losses and production suspensions due to the disease.
