Lesvos farmers call for mass protest over foot-and-mouth disease management

The Federation of Agricultural Associations of Lesvos has called for a mass mobilization on Thursday, August 27, outside the North Aegean Region headquarters. The protest coincides with a Regional Council meeting regarding the management of foot-and-mouth disease.

Agricultural groups are criticizing the government, the Regional Authority, and the Veterinary Service for perceived failures in managing the zoonotic disease. Concerns include deficiencies in prevention, disinfection, and the handling of animal deaths and burials. Farmers are seeking a concrete eradication plan and immediate compensation for livestock losses, lost income, and related expenses.

Additional demands include the full staffing of the Veterinary Service, mandatory 24-hour disinfection at ports and key road networks, and state funding for biosecurity measures. Farmers also expressed anxiety regarding the upcoming winter and the impact on new births and milk production.
