Lesvos wetlands to host birdwatching event in Kalloni
The Lesvos Fossil Forest Natural History Museum and the Kalloni Environmental Education Center are organizing an open birdwatching event at the Kalloni Salt Marsh. The activity is scheduled for Wednesday, September 16, 2026, at 17:00, at Observatory No. 3.
The event aims to introduce participants to the rich avian fauna of Lesvos's wetlands. The Kalloni Salt Marsh is one of the island's most significant wetlands, hosting over 60 species of passerine birds. Recent weekly observations recorded various species, including 194 moorhens, 36 great white pelicans, 27 common moorhens, 17 cormorants, 2 black storks, and 35 redshanks.
This period is particularly significant for birdwatching due to the onset of autumn migration. Lesvos serves as a vital intermediate station for migratory birds traveling between Europe, Asia, and Africa, thanks to its geographical proximity to Asia Minor and its extensive wetland network.
