Lesy ČR releases 82 capercaillie to Beskydy mountains

Lesy ČR has released 82 captive-bred capercaillie into the Beskydy mountains this autumn, marking a record number for the program. The group consists of 44 males and 38 females, aimed at strengthening the population of one of the most endangered bird species in the Czech Republic.

The breeding program, which has been active in the Beskydy region since 2017, utilizes mountain acclimatization aviaries to ensure the birds develop natural behaviors. Alojz Riško, the North Moravian regional director of Lesy ČR, noted that leaving the care of chicks to the breeding females helps the young birds acquire the skills necessary for survival and reproduction in the wild.

To support the population, foresters are also improving natural habitats by thinning specific forest stands, supporting blueberry growth, and protecting quiet areas to ensure undisturbed nesting. The initiative includes international cooperation with experts and breeding facilities in Austria, Poland, and France to exchange experience and genetic material.
