Letitia James and Saritha Komatireddy face off in NY AG debate

New York Attorney General Letitia James and Republican challenger Saritha Komatireddy met for their only debate ahead of the November election. The discussion focused on James’s record and her relationship with the federal government.

James framed herself as ‘the people’s lawyer,’ vowing to remain an independent defender of New York against executive actions she characterizes as unlawful or unconstitutional. She explicitly stated she would not be ‘Trump’s puppet,’ positioning her office as a legal safeguard against the administration of President Donald Trump.

Komatireddy, a former federal prosecutor, challenged James on her handling of Medicaid fraud, crime, and her use of taxpayer funds. The debate also addressed James’s recent appointment by Governor Kathy Hochul as special prosecutor in a Cornell University rape investigation, a role that has drawn scrutiny due to James’s previous public expressions of empathy for the alleged victim.
