Letras en Sevilla resumes with focus on Spanish Civil War

The XI edition of the Letras en Sevilla cultural cycle has commenced in Seville, Spain, focusing on the theme ‘1936: the war we all lost’ to coincide with the 90th anniversary of the Spanish Civil War. Co-organizers Arturo Pérez-Reverte and Jesús Vigorra noted that the event had been postponed from February due to significant controversy and the withdrawal of several speakers.

The postponement followed the resignation of writer David Uclés, who declined to participate due to the presence of other speakers, including José María Aznar and Iván Espinosa de los Monteros. Organizers described the period as difficult, citing political pressure and attempts to silence certain viewpoints.

The current program aims to foster pluralism by hosting figures from across the political spectrum, including former Prime Minister José María Aznar, former Madrid Mayor Manuela Carmena, and Minister of Territorial Policy and Democratic Memory Ángel Víctor Torres. The organizers emphasized the importance of hearing diverse perspectives to avoid the error of only listening to those who agree with one's own views.
