Letterboxd attracts bids from A24, Sony, and NYT in potential $300M+ sale

Letterboxd, the popular film-focused social media platform, is reportedly the subject of a bidding war that could value the company at more than $300 million. Recent interest has expanded to include indie studio A24 and The New York Times Company, joining previous suitors such as Sony Pictures Entertainment, Netflix, and Paramount.

The platform, which allows users to log, rate, and review movies, has grown significantly from 1.8 million users in 2020 to over 30 million members globally. The potential sale is being facilitated by the Canadian holding company Tiny, which acquired a 60% stake in Letterboxd in 2023 for an estimated $50 million to $60 million.

Industry analysts note that Letterboxd’s highly engaged Gen Z and millennial audience makes it a valuable asset. While a sale to a studio like A24 or Sony could offer industry synergies, it may also raise questions regarding potential conflicts of interest for a platform used to review cinematic works. The New York Times has a history of acquiring niche media brands like Wirecutter and The Athletic, though such an acquisition would also face scrutiny regarding editorial independence.
