Letterboxd sale talks draw interest from Netflix, Sony and Paramount

Letterboxd, the New Zealand‑born social platform for film reviews and tracking founded in 2011, now has over 30 million users worldwide. The service is majority‑owned (60 %) by the Canadian holding firm Tiny, which bought its stake in 2023 for about US$50‑60 million, while the founders retain the remaining 40 %. Tiny has launched a sales process managed by investment bank LionTree that is “floating” a valuation of roughly US$250 million. Early‑stage discussions involve several major entertainment groups, including streaming giant Netflix, Sony Pictures Entertainment, Paramount Skydance, private‑equity firms TPG and RedBird Capital, and venture‑capitalist Alexis Ohanian’s Seven Seven Six. The platform’s recent launch of an online video‑rental store has added to its strategic appeal. Community members have expressed concern that acquisition by a studio or streamer could compromise editorial independence and bias recommendations toward owned titles. No deal has been confirmed and the parties have declined to comment.
