Letterboxd looks for buyer as studios and Netflix express interest

Letterboxd, a movie‑focused social network founded in 2011 in New Zealand, has more than 30 million users, many under 35. Its founders sold a majority stake to a Canadian investment firm in 2023; that firm now seeks to convert its investment into cash.

Reports say Sony Pictures, Paramount Pictures, and Netflix are among potential buyers, with Reddit co‑founder Alexis Ohanian also mentioned. The sale price is estimated at about $250 million. Industry observers note a possible conflict of interest if a studio acquires the platform, as it could influence film promotion and reviews.
