Letting agent use reaches two-year high in England and Wales

The proportion of private rental housing managed by letting agents in England and Wales has reached a two-year high. Research conducted by Pegasus Insight for the National Residential Landlords Association (NRLA) indicates that 66% of rentals in these regions are now administered by an agent in some capacity.

The NRLA attributes this trend to landlords seeking assistance in navigating increasingly complex regulations, such as the Renters’ Rights Act. However, the association warned that this shift increases exposure to unqualified or poorly informed agents. Data shows that satisfaction with repairs is lower among renters using agents (59%) compared to those managed directly by landlords (73%).

In response to these developments, the NRLA is calling on the government to accelerate the implementation of minimum education and training standards for agency staff. While a new code of practice is expected later this year, the association expressed concern regarding plans for further consultations on mandatory qualifications scheduled for next year.
