Leucine plays key role in muscle health and mitochondrial function

Research highlights the critical role of the amino acid leucine in combating sarcopenia and maintaining cellular energy. As individuals age beyond 65, muscles often exhibit anabolic resistance, requiring higher protein intake and strength training to maintain mass and strength. Leucine acts as a metabolic signal, specifically through the mTOR complex, to trigger muscle protein synthesis.

A study from the University of Cologne, published in Nature Cell Biology, further reveals that leucine plays a vital role in mitochondrial efficiency. The research indicates that high levels of leucine can attenuate the activity of the SEL1L protein, which acts as a quality control inspector for damaged proteins. By preventing the degradation of outer membrane proteins in the mitochondria, leucine helps maintain cellular respiration and energy production.

While these findings show promise for aging and muscle health, researchers noted that in human lung cancer cell lines, certain genetic modifications related to leucine appeared to favor tumor survival. The study utilized Caenorhabditis elegans to demonstrate that altered leucine metabolism leads to decreased mitochondrial performance and fertility defects.
